Faculty of Health and Medical Technologies - Al-Dawr Organizes a Seminar Entitled “Application of ISO 45001 Standard in the Faculty”
Under the patronage of Prof. Alia Abbas Al-Attar, President of Northern Technical University, and under the supervision of Prof. Maqsood Adel Mahmoud, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Technologies, the Department of Quality Assurance and University Performance at the faculty organized a scientific seminar as part of the sustainable development programs entitled: ” Application of ISO 45001:2018 in the Academic Work Environment.” The seminar was presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Ghassan Jassim Hadi and Assistant Professor Mazen Nazir Farhan, and was attended by a select group of faculty members. The seminar addressed the main requirements of the ISO 45001:2018 international standard for occupational health and safety management systems, reviewing its basic clauses (1–10) and explaining the mechanisms for harmonizing these clauses with the requirements of the college’s work environment, including scientific laboratories, clinics, workshops, warehouses, and classrooms. The seminar aimed to achieve a set of objectives, most notably:
- Introducing the international standard ISO 45001:2018 and explaining its structure and the basic requirements for an occupational health and safety management system.
- Highlighting the importance of implementing an effective occupational health and safety system to protect faculty, staff, and students and reduce accidents and injuries within the various college facilities.
- Clarifying the role of senior leadership at the college—including the dean, assistants, and department heads—in adopting a clear safety policy and supporting its implementation.
- Presenting the steps and mechanisms for the practical application of the standard, starting with a gap analysis, hazard identification, and risk assessment, and ending with the preparation of the necessary policies, procedures, and records.
- Highlight the complementary relationship between ISO 45001 and other management systems such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and demonstrate the possibility of integrating them into an integrated management system at the college.
- Promoting a culture of occupational safety and health among college staff and students and encouraging them to report hazards and participate in improving the work environment.
- Motivating academic departments and the Quality Assurance Division to adopt clear performance indicators to measure and continuously improve safety levels.
The symposium witnessed constructive scientific discussions and positive interaction from the attendees, reflecting the college’s interest in establishing occupational safety principles and developing a safe academic environment that complies with approved international standards.
